On Aug. 25, 1901, Louis Armstrong was three weeks old when his paternal great-grandmother had him baptized at Sacred Heart of Jesus, a Canal Street parish in working-class Mid-City. During the Jim Crow era, the Catholic Church played a fallback role for African American mothers who gave birth at home and registered the infants at baptisms, rather than deal with state offices.
