(OSV News) — After Tennessee officials failed in their Sept. 30 attempt to execute death row inmate Christa Gail Pike for a 1995 murder, the state’s Gov. Bill Lee halted the one remaining execution for the rest of the year pending an investigation. But some Catholic opponents of the death penalty said that the incident demonstrates the flaws with capital punishment.

The Black Catholics who built the American Church

What if some of the most important builders of the Catholic Church in America are people many Catholics have never heard of? The story of Black Catholics in the United States is often told as a story of exclusion — and certainly there was exclusion. But it is also a story of building. Black Catholics built schools, religious communities, parishes, charitable organizations and institutions that continue to serve the Church today.
