Venerable Augustus Tolton’s life reads like the stuff of a drama.

And this week in Toledo, it will be: Saint Luke Productions presents Tolton: From Slave to Priest at the Ohio Theatre, 3112 Lagrange St., at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday, and again at 10 a.m. Thursday.

BALTIMORE (CNS) — Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the apostolic nuncio to the United States, spoke to the U.S. bishops Nov. 16 about the importance of listening to people in the church and being open to the work of the Holy Spirit.

He addressed the bishops on the first day of two days of public sessions at their fall general assembly Nov. 15-18 in Baltimore.

Amid Black exodus, young Catholics are pushing the church to address racism

(RNS) — Byron Wratee recalls the silence among white Catholic priests after the killing of Trayvon Martin. Since then, he said, he’s made a conscious decision to attend only Catholic parishes that are majority Black.

He’s remained critical of the church’s response to racism and racial justice in the aftermath of numerous police killings of Black men, but for Wratee, who grew up largely Pentecostal and converted to Catholicism 20 years ago, leaving the church is not an option.

Black Catholics Office presents Day of Reflection Nov. 20

The Office for Black Catholics of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia invites all to a Day of Reflection on the theme “Renewing the Human Family.”

St. Malachy Church in Philadelphia will host the event on Nov. 20 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The day of prayer, music and conversation will feature Sister Cora Marie Billings, R.S.M., as the guest speaker.

Cardinal Gregory challenges men of St. Bernardine to be ‘breath of hope’
