Annual Mass celebrates Black Catholic history

Jackie Bolware regularly attends the annual Mass in Celebration of Black Catholic History Month. She said that every year it’s different.

“Today you could hear the children clapping and singing; that’s how you know it’s a success,” she said. “You could see the faces, the appreciation, and understanding,” from the music and singing to the homily by Bishop Michael F. Burbidge, she said.

U.S. bishops award over $7 million in grants to home missions, thanks to nation’s Catholics

Dozens of “home mission dioceses” across the nation have received much-needed financial support, provided by the generosity of U.S. Catholics through an annual collection.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops announced Dec. 1 that 69 mission dioceses and Eastern Catholic eparchies had been awarded a collective total of more than $7.8 million in grants.

Pope Leo entrusts Lebanon to St. Charbel’s intercession, prays at his tomb

Pope Leo XIV began his second day in Lebanon on Monday with a deeply symbolic pilgrimage to the tomb of St. Charbel Makhlouf, entrusting the country and the wider Middle East to the intercession of the saint whom many Lebanese, Christians and Muslims alike, invoke as the “heavenly physician.”

Sr Jamie T. Phelps, leading light of the Black Catholic Movement, dead at 84

Sr Jamie T. Phelps, one of the nation’s most influential Black womanist theologians and a leading light of the Black Catholic Movement, has died in Michigan after a brief illness. She was 84 years old and no cause of death was released.

The Adrian Dominican Sisters, of which Phelps was the first Black member and in which she served for 66 years, announced the news on Nov. 24, two days after her death.
