Daryl Grigsby’s new book “Catholics for the Common Good: An Eternal Offering” reaches into the imago Dei roots of Mother Church and showcases the beauty of diversity and the richness of the people of God answering their respective calls to serve. The text succinctly chronicles the lives of men and women who courageously demonstrated their depth of awareness and love for God and others in quite remarkable ways.

Historically Black Tampa education institution becoming microschool

St. Peter Claver Catholic School opened more than 100 years ago and is pivoting toward the recent education trend.

The brick school building has stood as a beacon on the northern edge of downtown Tampa for all of Evelyn Wilson’s 95 years.

St. Peter Claver Catholic School, which Wilson attended from 1935 until 1947, was built in 1894, long before the nearby interstates plowed through a bustling center of Black life in Tampa. It has educated more than 2,500 students, mostly Black, who came from a nearby public housing complex and beyond.

Question Corner: What are the rules for attending a non-Catholic wedding?

Q: Recently my cousin got engaged and is in the planning process of her wedding. She is a baptized Catholic and has received both first Communion and confirmation. Over time my cousin slowly fell away from the Faith. The man she is marrying is a great guy — however, he is not Catholic. From the looks of it, the wedding is not going to be in a Catholic Church and more along the lines of a beach wedding or at a fancy hotel.

Pope Francis names Bishop Lewandowski to Diocese of Providence, R.I.

Pope Francis has named Bishop Bruce A. Lewandowski, C.Ss.R., as the new bishop of the Diocese of Providence, R.I. The appointment was publicized in Washington April 8 by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States.

Sister Thea Bowman Conference celebrates Black Catholic saint-to-be in Washington

The event was held at Servant of God Thea Bowman’s alma mater, the Catholic University of America, and highlighted her remarkable life and legacy.

WASHINGTON — More than 150 attendees from around the country gathered Saturday at the Catholic University of America for the inaugural Sister Thea Bowman Conference, celebrating the life and legacy of the internationally known Black Catholic nun. The Mississippi-born preacher, teacher, and CUA alum is now on the path to sainthood.
