NBCC Resources List

After 25 years their message is still relevant. Black Catholic Bishops call for dynamic evangelization in the Black community.

In each generation, the Spirit gives a specific assignment to its spiritual leaders. The assignment given usually is a unique, yet prophetic call to move God's people to a higher level of mission. This is what happened twenty five years ago (1984) when the African American Catholic Bishops acted in unison to speak about evangelization within the African American Catholic community through the Pastoral Letter, "What We Have Seen and Heard". This was a Letter to us about evangelization.

CONGRESS X PLAN OF ACTION
A PROVEN FOUNDATION FOR FRUITFUL MINISTRY

Download Congress X Plan of Action (PDF)

Congress X engaged hundreds of youth and over two thousand adults and affirmed the value and the vibrancy of the Black Catholic Movement. We affirmed that our Movement is grounded in the sacramental life of the Catholic Church and committed to working for positive change in our community, particularly regarding Africa, Catholic Education, HIV-AIDS, Parish Life, Social Justice, Spirituality, Racism, and Youth and Young Adults.

A Proven Foundation for Fruitful Ministry: Congress X Plan of Action is our guidebook for the next five years. You will find here theological insights and practical steps that your parish and diocese can use to carry out our shared commitments. Those commitments are rooted in the evangelization mission of the National Black Catholic Congress.

SUSTAINING CATHOLIC EDUCATION
IN AND FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY

This book is the result of an initiative of the National Black Catholic Congress (NBCC) Leadership Commission on Catholic Education: to empower Black Catholics to reclaim Catholic schools and institutions of higher learning.

The NBCC Commission on Catholic Education focuses on improving the experience of the Black student throughout elementary, secondary, and higher education. We are inclusive of all Catholic Institutions and we share the vision of Black Catholic education at the heart of the Church, evangelizing a socially just Church.

Congress X Plan of Action, Diocesan Progress Report: Executive Summary

During 2009, NBCC surveyed diocesan staff nationwide to assess progress on the Congress X Plan of Action. Respondents rated their diocese's progress and described their activities on the Plan's action steps for Africa, HIV-AIDS, Parish Life, Racism, Social Justice, and Youth and Young Adults.

We collected qualitative information for the action steps on Spirituality and Catholic Education.

The Executive Summary provides a quick overview of the survey method and results, with graphs showing which action steps and principles have been getting the most (and the least) attention nationwide. For a full summary of the quantitative and qualitative results of the survey, see the more detailed Appendices to the report, also available on this website.

Congress X Plan of Action Diocesan Progress Report: Appendices

When the NBCC surveyed dioceses last year to assess progress on the Congress X Plan of Action, we asked for details about successful programs, as well as comments about difficulties or challenges. This yielded a treasure trove of information about innovative and successful activities. We share this rich detail in eight Appendices to the Congress X Plan of Action Diocesan Progress Report.

For the core principles on Africa, HIV-AIDS, Parish Life, Racism, Social Justice, and Youth/Young Adults, an appendix lists the pertinent steps in the Congress X Plan of Action, outlines which dioceses reported success on these steps (Who's doing what, where?), and reviews any trends and issues that emerged in the survey. We hope readers will not hesitate to contact the dioceses listed to learn from and build upon their experiences and expertise.

The Appendix on Spirituality offers a list of the books, speakers, videos, teaching materials, and programs that African American pastoral leaders and parishioners across the country have found valuable.

The Appendix for Catholic Education describes data on open, closed, and threatened Black Catholic schools (i.e., in the 40 arch/dioceses who responded to the survey) and lists innovative development and scholarship programs.
