My dear friends in Christ,
The recent assassination attempt on the life of former President Donald Trump has forced us to take an in-depth look at the social norms Americans currently embrace. We have built our society upon having our voices heard and our opinions affirmed, and this is what makes the United States the symbol of freedom it is. However, violent acts used to enforce political opinion are unacceptable. Not only does violence of this kind violate the precepts of democracy, but it also defies Catholic Social Teaching by impinging on the life and dignity of all.
Within Catholic Social Teaching, specifically in the ‘Call to Family, Community, and Participation,’ we are taught that “[h]ow we organize our society — in economics and politics, in law and policy — directly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community.” We cannot forget that we are called to come together to form a community, despite our differences in appearance, culture, and opinions. We are called to love one another and to be Christ on Earth for each other.
Therefore, approach others with different viewpoints as Jesus would, with kindness, consideration, and love, and remember that we are all one in the Body of Christ.
With every best wish,
Bishop Roy E. Campbell, Jr.
President
