Featured Article: A Brief History of African American Catholics - "Slavery was a cruel social institution that corrupted the entire history of the United States. It divided the nation. It divided religion. It touched every part of the Catholic Church. In 1839, Pope Gregory XVI condemned slavery in the document Supremo Apostolatus Fastigio, but this made little impact. Catholic slaveholders did not consider slavery immoral, since the Bible did not forbid it. Many priests and religious sisters owned slaves. So did some bishops. Even some African American Catholics had slaves. A black person might purchase a slave in order to be able to marry him or her and the spouse remained, legally, a slave." | Read Full Story

Neighbor-To-Neighbor:
Outreach To Evangelization!!

Officer James Lumpkin, from the 77th Street Division of the Los Angeles Police Department, was also present to provide important safety tips to prevent the walkers from entering properties that were unsafe. Those conditions included: watching for cameras mounted on the properties - a possible indication of illegal drug sales; to be aware of addresses with pit bull dogs or 3-4 men or teens drinking on the property or 3-4 cars or trucks with spinners (hub caps which will "spin" while in motion - possible indication of gang affiliation). A patrol car was also provided to show a police presence in the neighborhood while the walk progressed.

As some left the church to begin the walk, Sister Marianna Halsmer, S.S.A. remained in the church to lead 10 others in prayer until we returned. The walkers and those remaining in prayer felt that the prayers were a major part of the success of this project. It was uplifting for those on the street as well as those in the church.

A unique aspect of our outreach project was grass roots ecumenical; Lewis Metropolitan CME Church, our neighbor 3 blocks north of St. Brigid, participated with us in the visit and prayer ministry. Over 50% of our neighbors opened their doors that 1st Saturday. The overwhelming response was one of gratitude that we made the effort to get to know the people in the neighborhood. There was also admiration that a Catholic and Protestant Church were working together as a witness to our faith in Jesus Christ.

Each 1st Saturday of the month we find "neighbors" who know about St. Brigid - some have attended Mass; others have attended the pre-school and after-school programs; some attended the NA and AA meetings held on church property; some have received assistance through St. Vincent de Paul Society. Our neighbors have much good will towards St. Brigid. The majority of home owners and renters have lived in the area for over ten (10) years. We met one woman who has lived in the neighborhood since 1943.
