Diocese Holds Groundbreaking for New Resurrection Catholic School

Memphis, TN - The Most Reverend J. Terry Steib, S.V.D., Bishop of Memphis will officiate at a ground breaking ceremony on Sunday, June 4th for the construction of the new Resurrection Catholic School at 5475 Newberry, in the Hickory Hill community. A procession from the Church of the Resurrection will end at the site of the future school.

Construction of the Resurrection Catholic School is scheduled to be completed in August 2007. When construction is completed, and the school is fully staffed and occupied it is expected to hold 350-400 students. Dr. Rafael Rondon will be the school's principal; he comes to Memphis from Dade County, Florida.

Enrollment for pre-school and kindergarten classes only is now taking place. Initially the school will serve Pre-K and kindergarten classes and then each year for the next eight years, one grade will be added until the school serves students through the 8th grade. By introducing a child at the earliest age possible to a challenging, private, Catholic environment, the students understand exactly what is expected of them.

"This is our eighth Jubilee School since the initiative started with one school in August 1999. We now have more than 1,200 students in 7 Jubilee Schools and two urban initiatives," said Dr. Mary McDonald, Superintendent of Catholic Schools. "These schools are a gift to the community and the children and families we serve, that lifts us all."

The Resurrection Catholic School will be the latest of the Jubilee Schools to open. It joins the other Jubilee Schools: St. Augustine Elementary, De La Salle Elementary, St. John Elementary, St. Joseph Elementary, Little Flower Elementary, and St. Patrick Elementary. The Jubilee Catholic Schools serve various urban neighborhoods around the city and are funded by the Catholic Memphis Urban Schools Trust (CMUST). Though Jubilee Schools' tuition is the same as at other Catholic schools (approximately $4,000 per year), very few families pay full tuition, thanks to CMUST.

The typical Jubilee School family of three has an average income of just over $14,000. By comparison, the Shelby County average per capita income is $34,583 while the federal poverty standard is $12,120. A sliding scale is used to determine tuition at Jubilee Schools, meaning that some families pay as little as $100 a year - spread across 10 monthly installments. Typically 95% or more of each Jubilee School's students receive tuition assistance; over half qualify for 80% or greater tuition assistance. 87% of students qualify and receive free or reduced lunch.
