Featured Article: A Brief History of African American Catholics - "Slavery was a cruel social institution that corrupted the entire history of the United States. It divided the nation. It divided religion. It touched every part of the Catholic Church. In 1839, Pope Gregory XVI condemned slavery in the document Supremo Apostolatus Fastigio, but this made little impact. Catholic slaveholders did not consider slavery immoral, since the Bible did not forbid it. Many priests and religious sisters owned slaves. So did some bishops. Even some African American Catholics had slaves. A black person might purchase a slave in order to be able to marry him or her and the spouse remained, legally, a slave." | Read Full Story

Are you too Stressed to Be Blessed?

Letitia Holloway Owens, MPH, M.S.I know you all are thinking, "Didn't she mean Too Blessed to be Stressed?" No. Most of us recite this mantra but really don't believe what we're saying. We are too busy with our daily responsibilities and the wonderful world of technology has almost made us forget how to connect with people. We're on the cell phone, watching television, sending e-mails, and the list can go on. How many of us actually take time out to just be still? The Word says...."Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." Psalms 47:10.

A new year has begun and some of us are also experiencing an "Oh No!" moment because we wanted to find that extra special gift for our loved one and the bill just arrived in our mailbox. Yes, the New Year is sometimes as stressful as the holiday season. Eventually our body will react to stress and it's sometimes not a pleasant experience. How can we deal with this? Read on to find out how our thoughts affect our health.

We've all probably heard of people who "think" they've caught the latest illness that's publicized in the media. This is known as Psychosomatic Illness. Now there is evidence of Psychosomatic Wellness. In short, our expectations, emotions and thoughts impact our health.

How does this occur? Our brain sends chemical messages into our blood and then on to the rest of our body. We have endorphins which are natural pain killers. Gamma globulins help our immune systems. What's produced depends partly on our thoughts.

We can increase our immune systems by integrating the following habits into our lives:

bullet Be Optimistic - having a positive outlook can help the healing process. One study noted how bypass patients who were optimistic had fewer complications and recovered quicker.
bullet Surround ourselves with humor, friendship and love. We have to stay away from "Naysayers" and learn to laugh at the difficult times. Check out Proverbs 15:15 and Proverbs 17:22.
bullet Keep an Emergency kit that contains jokes, cartoons, funny stories and videotapes.
bullet Volunteer - the simple act of giving of your time and feeling needed can boost our immune system.
bullet Prayer - prepare a quiet place in your home just for you where you can meditate and pray. Light a candle, focus on the flame and pray. 1 Thes. 5:17

Let me leave you with the reminder that we need to know that we are all blessed by a wonderful Savior. There is no need for us to stress over anything. We must pray for guidance and turn it over to the Lord. Don't just talk about it! Be about it! Really and truly "Let Go and Let God" and watch your lives become ever more filled with joy and promise.

Check out Matthew 6:34 and Continue to Be a Blessing.

Until next time, Kneel to Heal.

Peace and Blessings,
Letitia
