Social Action Summer Institute
A National Institute for Catholic Social Justice Ministries

Who attends the SASI?

Social Action Summer InstituteCatholic social justice leaders who want to learn more about Catholic social teaching, apply it to the “signs of the times” and learn skills to be more effective in the public arena, all within the context of prayer, liturgy, and a Catholic spirituality of social justice. A supportive and challenging community of peers helps all participants grow.

What “track” should I sign up for?

It depends on whether you are a parish or diocesan leader and what kind of formation and training you seek. In the first half of the week, parish leaders and new diocesan and national organization leaders should attend Track I. Diocesan and national organization leaders who have previously attended a SASI should attend Track II. In the second half of the week, the tracks are simply based on whether you identify as a parish leader or as a diocesan/national organization leader.

Can I sign up for one workshop or one day?

No. The SASI is designed to be a complete one-week experience. For those who have difficulty attending the whole week, there is the option of attending one of the half-week tracks.

Is financial aid available?

Yes, with a priority for diocesan leaders, particularly first-time attendees. Scholarships are typically partial and never cover travel expenses. Decisions on scholarships for diocesan participants are made on a rolling basis. Decisions on scholarships for parish participants will be made June 16. To explore additional sources of financial aid, contact your diocesan social action director or pastor. To apply for financial aid, contact Jeff Korgen at 212-431-7825, extension 213.

Is the campus handicap-accessible?

Yes and no. Oglethorpe University is fully ADA-compliant, but the main auditorium is a National Historic Landmark and therefore exempted from some provisions of the ADA. If you can walk up five steps you will have no problem accessing the building. Please let us know if you have a disability which prevents you from easily walking between campus buildings throughout the day.

Is the campus air conditioned?

Yes! In fact, it may make sense to bring along a sweater or sweatshirt for those moments when you feel chilled by air conditioning.
