The Baltimore-based not-for-profit group Campaign
for Our Children last month in Maryland began airing two television
public service announcements as part of a $3 million campaign that uses
different techniques to advocate abstinence among teenage boys and
girls, the Washington Times reports. In the advertisement aimed at boys,
titled "Wait," one male adolescent is joined by 200 other teenage boys,
saying, "We will wait. ... We will be smart. We will be strong. We will
respect ourselves."
The commercial aimed at teenage girls, titled
"Pink," includes teenage girls dancing and singing to a rap song with
lyrics including, "My hour, my power to wait. This is the vow I take to
bring about my fate. No time to waste. Only dreams to chase. Virginity
can't be replaced." Bronwyn Mayden, executive director of CFOC, said,
"For the boys, they need to know and feel like they are not alone (if
they wait to have sex). For [the girls' advertisement], we wanted to get
in front of the kids in the medium that they know and respect. We wanted
to be a little edgier to break through the clutter." The ads, which were
created by Baltimore's Carton Donofrio Partners, aired in Georgia and
Los Angeles this summer, according to Mayden. Print and radio ads are
also being developed as part of the campaign, according to the Times (De
Marco, Washington Times, 8/11).
