Featured Article: A Brief History of African American Catholics - "Slavery was a cruel social institution that corrupted the entire history of the United States. It divided the nation. It divided religion. It touched every part of the Catholic Church. In 1839, Pope Gregory XVI condemned slavery in the document Supremo Apostolatus Fastigio, but this made little impact. Catholic slaveholders did not consider slavery immoral, since the Bible did not forbid it. Many priests and religious sisters owned slaves. So did some bishops. Even some African American Catholics had slaves. A black person might purchase a slave in order to be able to marry him or her and the spouse remained, legally, a slave." | Read Full Story

Black Catholic Young Adults

Come March With The Saints: NCCYM 2010

"The National Conference on Catholic Youth Ministry (NCCYM) is the largest conference in the country for adults who minister to and with Catholic youth. Join thousands of your colleagues-youth and campus ministers, religious education leaders, clergy and religious, young adult ministers, performers, artists and volunteers-for four days of inspiring keynotes, challenging workshops, dynamic prayer and worship, extensive networking, hundreds of resource exhibits, and good-hearted entertainment."

This December (12/9-12/2010), adults from around the country, and some from outside of the country, will come down to New Orleans to fellowship, share, and sharpen their skills to help them be better ministers to and with young people. Will you be there? Or do you know somebody that could benefit from the resources that this conference has to offer? Well registration is now open at www.nfcym.org under the "March With The Saints" link.

With the conference being down in New Orleans, there is a large push for the Black Catholic perspective to be represented during the conference. Therefore, much of the music, worship, workshops, etc. are geared toward our Black Catholic experience. So now it is up to you to get our people there.

As you register, you will be able to choose your workshops ahead of time. Be sure that during Workshop Round E, you select the "African American Ministry/Ministers Session." This will be a forum for networking between those who serve black youth across the country in parish, school, and catechetical settings. It will also introduce "The Black Catholic Youth Ministry Vitality Project" to you. This new and innovative initiative, co-sponsored by the National Black Catholic Congress and the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, is your source of valuable information and support to help you and your young leaders be totally effective in ministry.

Also, come ready to party on Friday night (12/10/2010) during the "Taste of New Orleans" fundraiser for the Catholic Youth Foundation. The cost is $45 dollars (the cost of a meal for two people dining out) and you get food from 25 of New Orleans' best restaurants. You will also see performances by great local artists such as Tim Laughlin, Rockin Dopsie, and Grammy Award winning artist, Irma Thomas, just to name a few (more info. on the website).

There are also a number of PRECONFERENCE opportunities for those who might want to come down early. There is an opportunity for adults to come down a few days early to do service in the New Orleans area. There is an opportunity for those who minister to/with young adults to learn more about this field. There are preconferences that discuss technology and ministry as well as living out your strengths. You can register for these as you go through your regular registration. Also, there is more information about these conferences on the NCCYM website.

Several of us from around the country have been working on this conference to make sure the content is relevant for our community. This, it is up to us to be there so our presence will be felt and our voices heard at this important national venue. So I urge all those who work with youth (youth ministers, teachers, DRE's, pastors, etc.) to come down to New Orleans this December and join the 2nd Line as we all "March With The Saints."

*Registration and Complete Conference info. can be found here
