Featured Article: A Brief History of African American Catholics - "Slavery was a cruel social institution that corrupted the entire history of the United States. It divided the nation. It divided religion. It touched every part of the Catholic Church. In 1839, Pope Gregory XVI condemned slavery in the document Supremo Apostolatus Fastigio, but this made little impact. Catholic slaveholders did not consider slavery immoral, since the Bible did not forbid it. Many priests and religious sisters owned slaves. So did some bishops. Even some African American Catholics had slaves. A black person might purchase a slave in order to be able to marry him or her and the spouse remained, legally, a slave." | Read Full Story

Are You Really Free? (part 2)

Comment on Youth Articles in the forum

What is the one thing that can help you organize not only your academic life, but also your relationships, friendships and all the other dimensions of your life? The one thing is your relationship with God. If you have a solid foundation with the Lord, responding to Him because you have heard Him speak to you, then you will be able to live a life that is not only successful, but healthy and happy and HOLY! But a relationship with God is just as complex as any other kind of relationship. In one sense it is much easier because God is always willing, always there, always ready regardless of anything that you have thought, said or done in the past. You just have to be open to changing your lives. In another sense it is a bit more difficult because you don't see God or hear him like you see and hear others. So sometimes it is difficult to know if He is really there.

The truth is, that not only is He already there, but He is already speaking. You just have to learn how to listen. One of the ways you listen is by placing yourself in an environment where His word is spoken, for instance Mass on Sunday! Imagine how much richer your life would be if you regularly heard and put into practice the Word of God. Having listened to the Word of God, you might begin to appreciate even more the great gift of the Sacraments which you have received so often, especially the Holy Eucharist and Penance. You stuff junk food into yourself all the time. You get excited about the taste and smells of a good meal. Why are you not as excited to eat and drink the Body and Blood of Christ which give you a taste of eternal life? It is probably because you haven't taken the time to understand what this wonderful gift is. His Word often confronts you. It reminds you that much of what you get into is sinful. If you are sexually active to any degree, you have real moral and spiritual obstacles to overcome. If you are a substance abuser, alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs, you have brought "demons" into you life that can destroy you. If you are a cheater, on exams or in relationships, if you are a thief, little things or small, then you have some soul searching that needs to take place. The Sacrament of Penance has been given to you to take care of these things and more, if you are willing to listen.

When all the fun stops and the problems reappear, so-called friends are usually nowhere to be found or incapable of being of real help. God never fails. Tragically too many young people, especially young Catholics, don't seem to be able to recognize this, at least not right away. It seems so easy for you to just quit. You might go to Mass when you feel like it, but if you don't you roll over in bed soon you don't go at all. And what about prayer? If there is no daily attempt to communicate with Him, what kind of relationship can He develop with you? Well it is very difficult for God to help you, if you don't want Him to. But if you give Him just a little bit of a chance, He is already there. Know His Truth, and it will set you free! So think about it, pray about it, and let God have His place in your life!
