Call for Proposals
2008 Gandhi-King Conference on Peacemaking

Conference Theme: "Continuing the Dream…Constructing the World House"

"We have inherited a large house, a great "world house" in which we have to live together-black and white, Easterner and Westerner, Gentile and Jew, Catholic and Protestant, Moslem and Hindu-a family unduly separated in ideas, culture and interest, who, because we can never again live apart, must learn somehow to live with each other in peace.

We must rapidly begin the shift from a "thing"-oriented society to a "person"-oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism and militarism are incapable of being conquered.

We still have a choice today: nonviolent coexistence or violent co-annihilation. This may well be humanity's last chance to choose between chaos and community."

-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community, 1967

Deadline for Proposals: August 1, 2008

Notification of accepted proposals will be made by: August 15, 2008

The 2008 two day conference is entitled "Continuing the Dream…Constructing the World House". The conference will focus on practical ways we can each build the 'world house' that Dr. King referred to as the next step in creating the beloved community. Our house will be built on three pillars; nonviolence, social justice, and community building. All plenary speakers, workshops, paper presentations, dialogue sessions, panel discussions, and film presentations will fall under one of these pillars.

Possible topics under each pillar include but are not limited to:

  • Nonviolence: personal, political, social, and spiritual nonviolence
  • Social Justice: Environmental, Economic, and Racial Justice
  • Community Building: Nonviolent Communication, Conflict Resolution, Dialogue Processes, Multiculturalism, Exploring Privilege

Proposals for the 2008 Youth Conference are also being solicited.

Presentations that incorporate stories, art, music, video, or photographic displays are encouraged, as well as proposals offering practical tools and skills.

Proposals should be submitted via the proposal form on our website at www.GandhiKingConference.org. This is the preferred form of submission, but proposals may also be mailed to the address below.

Please note that a more selective and limited number of proposals will be selected this year.
