Xavier University of Louisiana's
INSTITUTE FOR BLACK CATHOLIC STUDIES
SUMMER SESSION: JUNE 29 through JULY 21, 2007
|

Dioceses have increased their educational requirements for participation in the ministries and mission of the Church. The need for theologically and culturally competent ministers in the African American community grows. The Institute is designed to assist Black and cross cultural priests, religious, lay women and men, seminarians, novices, catechists, diocesan administrators, deacons, lay associates and volunteers from Black and all other cultural heritages who are engaged in Catholic ministry among Black Catholics and the broader Pan African Community in the United States. Our goal is to assist students to develop more meaningful and culturally effective ministerial strategies for the evangelizing and social justice ministries of the Church within the culturally diverse Black Community.

The participants will find in the Institute a holistic experience of community life structured around prayer, liturgy, theological and ministerial studies as well as experiences designed to develop and enrich understanding of African American culture. The IBCS, set within the Black Catholic context of Xavier University and the city of New Orleans, offers a variety of opportunities for intellectual, professional and spiritual growth that integrates the major teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church and Black Religious Experience.

IBCS Programs include:

Master's Degree Program
The Th.M. degree is constituted by an interdisciplinary curriculum that includes theology, Scripture, history, aesthetics, and social science along with a supervised pastoral/ministerial practicum.

Certificate Programs and Enrichment Program

Spiritual Enrichment Programs
* Taste of the Institute * Eldership
