An Enrichment and Certificate Program
NEW FORMAT: THREE ONE-WEEK SEMINARS

Summer 2006 Introduces A Revised Catechist Formation Program In Response To The Current And Diverse Ministerial Priorities Of Parish Catechists And/Or School Religion Teachers In The African American Community. Participants May Enroll In Any Or All Of The Following One-Week Seminars.*

1.

IBCF 0001 - The Nature And Goals Of Africentric Catechesis, July 3-7, 2006
INSTRUCTOR: Sr. Eva Marie Lumas, SSS

 

An interactive seminar that explores (1) The mission and tasks of Africentric catechesis including an overview of theological/pastoral documents that encourage inculturation and holistic faith formation, (2) qualities of a catechist, (3) Black learning styles/catechetical environments and methods, (4) an initial exploration of resources.

   
2. IBCF 0002 - Naming and Claiming Our Resources, July 10-14, 2006
INSTRUCTOR: Ms. Therese Wilson Favors
  A hands-on exploration of resources and "best practices" developed by and for catechists and religion teachers in the Black Catholic community. Among the featured resources is "Keep on Teaching" - 15 catechetical aids produced by the Office of African American Catholic Ministries and Division of Evangelization and Catechesis, Baltimore, MD
   
3. IBCF 0003 - Developing Meaningful Strategies, July 17-21, 2006
INSTRUCTOR: Ms. Donna Grant
  A "teach-in" immersion process that engages participants in developing catechetical strategies for use in their local ministry. The thematic focus of this seminar is "Living the Faith: Black and Catholic". Participants will work together sharing insight, skills, and resources readily adaptable for a variety of catechetical communities and contexts.
   
4. IBCF 0004 - The Synthesis Seminar (current Level 3), July 3-21, 2006 (3-weeks)
INSTRUCTOR: Ms. Kaffy Babineaux-Belvin
  Required for certification, this seminar enables students to further develop the skills of program planning, implementation, and evaluation begun in Level 2 of the three-summer program. Student projects designed in Level 2 undergo a peer review. Implementation and evaluation of the Level 2 project, in collaboration with the seminar instructor, are required for enrollment in this seminar.

Each of the new one-week catechetical seminars is designed to provide ministerial training, as well as ongoing enrichment, support, and networking for catechists and/or DREs (including IBCS alumna). Each seminar will be conducted in conjunction with one of the Institute's Black Religious Expression seminars, and a one-week Core Course (i.e., Scripture, Black Catholic History, Black Spirituality, etc.). Enrollment in the catechetical program requires enrollment in a BRE seminar and one Core Course. 25 students maximum in each of the catechetical seminars.

NOTE WELL: CONTINUING STUDENTS IN THE THREE-SUMMER IBCS CATECHIST FORMATION PROGRAM: Level 2 of the three-summer certification program will not be offered Summer 2006. All students eligible for Level 2 may enroll in IBCF 0002 and IBCF 0003 described above. All students eligible for Level 3 are encouraged to enroll in IBCF 0004 (as well as any one of the one-week Core Courses, and a BRE seminar) to complete the requirements for certification.

*Students desiring certification are not required to complete all three one-week seminars in a single summer. However, certification requires completion of all three of the one-week seminars within 2-4 summers, followed by completion of a project and the three-week seminar.

MINISTERIAL LEADERSHIP IN THE FAITH COMMUNITY
An Enrichment and Certificate Program; Three One-Week Seminars

Summer 2006 will feature three stand-alone courses on Catholic Social Teaching (CST) that explore the Church's directives on building a just and peaceful world. Geared toward the Black Catholic faithful and those who minister with the Black community, these offerings will provide vital information about a central aspect of Church life and prepare participants to be more effective local leaders in the mission of Christ. Participants may enroll in any or all of the following one-week seminars.

WEEK 1 July 3 - 7, 2006

1. LDER 0001 - A Black Perspective on Catholic Social Teaching
Instructor: Fr. Byran Massingale
  An interactive seminar that introduces the body of Catholic Social Teaching, its seven major themes and values, and explores the implications of CST for the Black community. Formal class will be held on July 3, 5, 6 and 7th. On July 4th students will participate in a required IBCS community event that reflects on African American experience and traditions.
   

WEEK 2 July 10 - 14, 2006

2. LDER 0002 - Economic Justice: Catholic Campaign for Human Development
Instructor: Ms. Donna Grimes
  An introduction to the Campaign for Human Development and other organizations that promote the Church's Social Teachings in real ways throughout the world. Who are these organizations? What are they doing? How do they support the outreach efforts of parish communities? Participants will be provided practical guidance on the grant application process and writing more effective proposals.
   
WEEK 3 July 17 - 21, 2006
3. LDER 0003 - Black Approaches to Catholic Social Teaching in the Faith Community
Instructor: Ms. Adrienne Curry
  A workshop designed to discuss, explore and collaborate towards effective presentation of Catholic Social Teaching in the local parish community. Participants will cultivate a working understanding of key Justice and Peace documents and develop a step-by-step implementation plan, with instructor feedback and list of resources that can be used with the faith community at home
