RETIREMENT
As required by Canon Law, I submitted my
resignation from the Office of Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New
Orleans to Pope Benedict XVI on my seventy-fifth birthday, December 13, 2005.
Because of his concern for the situation of African Americans in the
Archdiocese after Hurricane Katrina, the Holy Father asked me to continue to
serve until he would appoint a successor to replace me. On my seventy-sixth
birthday (December 13, 2006), His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI accepted my
resignation and at the same time appointed a new Auxiliary Bishop for New
Orleans, the Most Reverend Shelton J. Fabre, a priest of the Diocese of Baton
Rouge.
In retirement, I continue to assist in the
Archdiocese of New Orleans with Confirmations and various other forms of
ministry, including assistance to parishes for weekday and weekend Masses.
